While hnefatafl is a reconstructed game, and the rules are fluid from place to place. These are the rules for the tournament!
hnefatafl will take place on saturday (subject to change)
Story of the game: Your camp has been ambushed and you are surrounded. You must get your king out.
Layout: 11x11 board with at least the corners and the centre marked for "Thrones". 1x King, 12x Defending pieces, 24x attacking pieces.
Movement: All pieces can only move in straight lines as far as they want, providing there isn't another piece blocking their way. All pieces can hope over the throne in the centre, however only the king can sit on thrones.
Taking pieces: In order to take pieces, you must place two of your own pieces directly on either side of the target piece. To capture the king you must surround him on all four sides or three if the king is against the edge of the board. Pieces can be taken against unoccupied thrones. If you move between two pieces, this doesn't sacrifice your piece. King can take part in attacking moves.
Terms of victory: Defending will win when the king reaches one of the corners. Attacking will win when the king is captured. Conceding defeat is allowed, if the game becomes stale (repeated moving back and forth while not directly surrounded).
